A Fond Farewell to a Longstanding Trustee

Chris Winpenny was a SWALLOW Trustee for 27 years

Our Trustees generously give their support to SWALLOW, some for many years.  We had the pleasure of working with Chris Winpenny for an incredible 27 years, and it was with much sadness that we waved goodbye to him before Christmas, as he stepped down from his role.

Before he left, we took the chance to chat with Chris, to find out how he reflects on his experience with SWALLOW as it has grown over the years.

Can you share some of your favourite SWALLOW memories with us?

The first time I heard the SWALLOW Choir, which I think was at an Evaluation Day at Folly Farm, it was very moving.  I have attended almost all Evaluation Days and always leave with my spirits raised!

What inspired you to join the SWALLOW Trustee Board back in 1997?

I am afraid the reasons were entirely selfish! I was between jobs, and I saw an advert for an Honorary Treasurer for SWALLOW. The Charity was much smaller then and run by a Project Manager, Sue Sutherland, and to be honest I saw it as a way to enhance my CV.   I’m not sure it had much impact on my CV in the end, but it was one of the best decisions I ever made!

How has SWALLOW changed over the years, from your perspective?

SWALLOW has changed beyond recognition in terms the scope of services provided, members supported and staff numbers, but the original ethos remains and has developed and widened over the years.  When I joined, SWALLOW just rented one unit in the grounds of the Old Engine House.  After 2 or 3 years we moved into the Old Engine House and then progressively occupied the other buildings.

What has being a Trustee at SWALLOW brought to your life?

I was an Accountant by trade, and Accountants are not renowned for their empathy - but I do think being a Trustee of SWALLOW has made me more aware of other people’s problems and the members have generally been an absolute joy.  It was also very rewarding to be able to contribute to SWALLOW’s growth and development over such a long period.

What would you say to someone thinking of becoming a Trustee?

I would say go for it!  It is important that you have an interest in the Charity’s objectives, relevant experience and possibly a useful skill such as Finance, HR or Legal etc.

Do you have any other comments?

Bev arrived at SWALLOW just before me and Nicky a few years later and those two have been the driving force behind the development of the Charity. There have been problems and challenges, both internal and external to overcome and periods of high inflation, recession, a pandemic and the ever changing environment within the Local Authority. Working with them and Michelle and other members of the Senior Management Team has been a pleasure and a privilege and is the reason why I stayed so long!

I wish them and Jill (the new Chair of Trustees) and the other Trustees every success in the future as they continue to steer SWALLOW into a future which continues to throw up new challenges.

Thank you so much Chris, we wish you all the very best!
